The Christian Community Cupboard:
St. Monica's and 5 other churches in the Lubeck area (Lubeck United Methodist, Washington United Methodist, Fairview United Methodist, New England Baptist, and Lubeck Community Baptist) provide for the needs of people in our community through the Christian Community Cupboard in Lubeck. Together we were able to help over 200 families in 2009, including 228 adults and 150 children. In addition to helping the “Cupboard” with much needed supplies and food, The Special Projects Fund was able to help a few families with utility bills, medical expenses, and special needs..
St. Monica's provides workers for the Cupboard on the third Thursday of every month. If you'd like to share your time, contact: ccupboard@stmonicaparish.org
The main source of supplies and income is the "Food Basket Sunday" donation of food and money at Mass on the first Sunday of each month. Cash donations are always welcome. Our parish school of religion classes help transport the donated food to the cupboard, and The Joyful Noise music ministry donates any "love offerings" received when sharing music with other churches or community groups
We are responsible for seeing that the following items are in good supply:
canned beef stew
canned corn
Jell-O
dishwashing liquidsyrup
pasta
pudding
toothpasteWe accept all non-perishable food donations, but the Cupboard is counting on us to provide the items listed above. There is always a need for personal care items such as deodorant.
St. Monica Parish is involved in several ecumenical social ministries in our community. These include:
In addition, St. Monica's Special Projects Fund is used to help needy families with emergencies, special circumstances, and those in need who come to the Christian Community Cupboard (see above - also known as the Food Pantry/Clothes Closet). We do this primarily through special collections, although donations are always welcome. (Contact: ccupboard@stmonicaparish.org )
Our baby and lap quilt, walker bag and adult bib project has grown - and now we have a dedicated space! Our sister parish, St. Francis Xavier has joined us and is generously providing a place in their parish center on Market Street for us all to work.
Women and men of
all ages - join us every second Saturday (January through May) from 10am - 2pm. Bring
lunch.
No experience necessary!
We need:
Gently used blankets and mattress pads (for batting), portable sewing machines
(on loan for 5 months), sewing notions, cotton material, and bed sheets for
backing (cotton or flannel).
Donations can be made to the boxes at St. Monica or at St. X Parish
Center.
